Waiting
When Jake came home from school today
He didn‘t run outside to play
or to the kitchen for a snack
or pause, his backpack to unpack

Instead he caught me unawares
by bounding past me up the stairs
His bedroom door he slammed and locked
An hour tick-tocked on the clock

And then, at last, a boy burst out
I had to bark, I could not shout
This was not the boy I knew
for while inside his room he grew

fangs and claws and pointy ears
that stirred my deepest, darkest fears
but then he stooped and scratched my chin
and flashed me a familiar grin

Bye, I‘m off to trick or treat
my ghoulish, ghostly friends to meet
but do not worry, do not dread
I‘ll be home in time for bed.

So like a good and faithful pup
I‘m at his window waiting up
My only wish this holiday:
that a few dog treats come my way.
